Eva Ebin was born in Munkacs, Hungary in 1926 to Jeno and Ilona Szegel. Her childhood dream was to become a physician, which she writes, “was unheard of” for a woman at that time. Strong willed, determined and resilient, she refused to let anything get in her way – including the Holocaust. Eva was imprisoned in Auschwitz at age 17, losing her parents and large extended family immediately upon arrival. She nearly succumbed to typhus and the life threatening injury she sustained at a second concentration camp. She credits her survival to two things: the pact that she and her cousins made at Auschwitz to stick together no matter what, and, her dream…This moving memoir follows Eva through post war Europe, medical school, immigration to America, marriage to Dr. Leonard Ebin, and her illustrious career as a psychiatrist. Despite loss and solitude, Eva built a loving home based on Jewish tradition and values. What comes through loud and clear in "From DP to MD" is the importance of family. Indeed, Dr. Ebin’s life was enriched by nearly two dozen grandchildren, and over twice as many great grandchildren. Her legacy of commitment, care, and connection, continues to this day. Read more
